Welcome to the superhero edition of these reviews? It wasn’t my intention to watch superhero-heavy shows back-to-back, but that’s how everything played out. Enjoy these spoiler-free reviews as I take a look at whether or not I’d recommend them!

My Hero Academia (Season 1): 4.2/5
I enjoyed My Hero Academia a lot. The anime is a pretty loyal adaptation of the manga, taking what was already good about the story and expanding on it with stunning animation and voice acting. The world building and character dynamics work together to create more than just your usual superhero show, and I really appreciate the time it takes to develop a society that revolves around superheroes being commonplace. The climatic, unexpected finale has some awesome action sequences that are still my favorite scenes between Season 1 and Season 2. For anyone looking for a show that’s a fun blend of The Incredibles and underdog stories, this is a great choice.

My Hero Academia (Season 2): 4/5
My Hero Academia Season 1 continues to develop the strong character stories that it established in Season 1 with some notable standouts in Todoriki and Iida. This season is also double the length of the first season, and while it does a good job overall, the pacing and the way the stories are split in the season is a little wonky. A good chunk of the show is spent on the Sports Festival before somewhat awkwardly transitioning to the admittedly fascinating and exciting Hero Killer mini arc that also addresses the overarching narrative. This season also has a lot more action sequences than the first season, and with the stakes being quite a bit higher, it helps get invested in everything the characters are fighting for. The animation remains very consistent and beautiful to watch. I’m really excited for Season 3 to finish airing and look forward to seeing how the story continues to develop.

One Punch Man: 3/5
If you read my comparison of My Hero Academia and One Punch Man, I mentioned that One Punch Man didn’t really resonate with me, and I’m not really sure why that ended up being the case. For all intents and purposes, it should have been a show that I would have enjoyed. It’s a comedy that focuses on deconstructing the genre as a whole. It’s fascinating and funny, and the action sequences are awesome on top of it, but I didn’t find myself caring about the story or characters at all. Even after things picked up, I just couldn’t really get into it. One Punch Man isn’t bad by any means, and if you’re looking for something unique and engaging, One Punch Man will certainly deliver through its deconstruction of the superhero genre. I didn’t hate the show, it just wasn’t for me.
