After the miraculous success that was Twitch Plays Pokemon, the Twitch crowd has already embarked on the next entry: Twitch Plays Pokemon, Crystal Version, the follow up in the Gold/Silver generation. Apparently, they were going to go with Gold, but changed their minds to a superior game in the same generation with some nice upgrades in Crystal.
After conquering the original Red version in 16 days and spawning countless amazing, memes and a surprisingly epic underdog story, Twitch Plays Pokemon Crystal is hoping to recapture some of the magic of that initial run. This group started with a Totodile and has already obtained three gym badges.
While I wish them the best, and will probably stay apprised of their success (or lack thereof), I don’t have high hopes that the playthrough is going to catch lightning in a bottle twice. There was something special about the spontaneity and unpredictability of that initial run, and it’s going to be difficult to duplicate another time. In hindsight, Pokemon Red really was just about the best game to conduct this social experiment on, and it’s going to be hard to top. Then again, who knows – it’s the absurd nature of Twitch that makes them so fun to watch (or at least stay updated on), so anything is possible.
