I live and breathe Zelda. It’s no secret. I’m not ashamed. I write fan fictions. I spend hours theorizing over timeline possibilities. And I immerse myself in each and every title in the series as deeply as possible. You’re starting to get weirded out, but stay with me.
Last year, I wrote an article about suggestions I had for Skyward Sword. Much to my surprise, Nintendo incorporated very few of them. Somehow, the game still managed to be a great success, blending sharp motion gameplay with an intriguing story and a thing I like to call Zelda magic.
With the new Zelda game being worked on for the Wii U, I think it’s time for another round of ideas and speculation. Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Skyward Sword is the “last Zelda of its kind,” suggesting that series is in for an overhaul. Here are some changes I would like to see that would radically change the formula, take advantage of the tablet functionality, and yet stay true to the Zelda spirit. The Kingdom Hearts series certainly likes to space out its main entries. We are now five years and counting since the release of Kingdom Hearts 2, with only the prequels and side stories to bridge the gap. It is a legitimate concern now that if the world does end in 2012, John Cusack and his family will never see the proper third chapter in this series.
In fact, the word in the hood (also known as rumors my little sister tracks down) is that Tetsuya Nomura and his posse haven’t even started work on Kingdom Hearts 3 yet. Still, we all know it’s going to happen eventually, and after playing Birth by Sleep (and lamenting how monotone Aqua and Terra’s voice actors are), I’ve chronicled some of the changes I would like to see. Ladies and gentlemen of America, it’s time for the main event. You may have thought the radio show was the highlight of the media conglomerate that is “At the Buzzer.” Wrong. In fact, this whole website is simply an avenue for these articles, written by me about the things you really care about. As long as what you care about deals with video games or something video game related.
To start things off, I decided to talk about Zelda. As many of you should already know, the latest title in this prolific series, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, is slated to release this November, and is set to be chock full of the one-to-one motion controls for swinging Link’s sword that no one asked for or particularly wants.
Many fans hoped for a lot of things with Skyward Sword, and a greater dependency on the worst part of Twilight Princess, the motion controls, wasn’t one of them. While I’m sure the game will be another masterpiece, this hasn’t stopped the internet from exploding with their own speculations and hopes for directions the next entry in the franchise will take. Shame on you, internet, for being greedy and critical…but since you’re doing it, I may as well give my own two cents on what direction the new Zelda should take. Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that Twilight Princess is the last Zelda of “that kind” (whatever that means), so I will keep this in mind when formulating this list that will amuse one or two of you and enrage the rest.
