We’ve given the Legend of Heroes series plenty of love, so why not spend a moment today on another underappreciated JRPG franchise with the phenomenal Falcom Sound Team jdk providing the soundtrack?
Ys is Falcom’s most successful property, an action-based take on the genre that started back in the 1980s. Before VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, it had been eight years in between releases, to the point where I’d almost forgotten about it.
The Ys series is known for its music, featuring widely regarded OSTs that are among the best in video game history. It may not carry the clout that a Final Fantasy does in the States, but that’s mostly because of Falcom’s development focusing on PC, which really didn’t take off in America until the late-’90s.
This is the title theme from Ys VIII, and even knowing the franchise’s reputation, it still knocked me on my ass the first time I heard it. A quiet opening with piano and soft strings grabs your attention, and the song swells to a couple crescendos that scream “hey, check out this game, it might be pretty neat.” I’m going to do that as soon as my backlog opens up enough space — it’s either this or Horizon: Zero Dawn next, but it’s definitely happening at some point.
