Ah, yes. There are many songs that might be considered the most emblematic in Chrono Trigger (like the eponymous track, for instance), but I think this one takes the cake.
I can’t talk about why this track resonates with so many fans because we’re starting our playthrough of Chrono Trigger with today’s video and Michaela hasn’t ever played it before. But suffice to say that Schala’s Theme is sad and mysterious at the same time, and one of Mitsuda’s most beautiful pieces.
It’s telling that Chrono Trigger has so many great songs that I didn’t even mention Schala in the article for my five favorite tracks. I think I was trying to be a trend-setter at the time, avoiding the popular hits and being a wanna-be hipster or something. Still, as I mentioned there, this was one of the first CD sets I ever owned, one that I listened to a million times on the bus or on my bike going to and from school.
Chrono Trigger is more than two decades old now, a fact that makes me sad. But it endures because of its vibrant characters and fun time travel mechanics — and because of one of the best video game soundtracks ever made.
