Our list moves into the top 15, with picks that received at least one top-five vote from someone on the panel and support from others as well. Tomorrow: #10.
11) The Nightmare Before Christmas (2 votes, 150 points)
Chris: Jack Skellington’s tale is an interesting case in our top 25. The three main At the Buzzer folks don’t really like it that much. It still made it up to the #11 spot on the strength of a first-place vote and a fourth. Personally, I think it’s good, but even after three or four viewings I still don’t love it. I’m not sure why.
The musical numbers are good, but other than Oogie Boogie’s Song, I don’t know that there’s one I would listen to on a regular basis. Songs like What’s This and Jack’s Lament and Making Christmas are certainly notable.
The stop-motion animation holds up pretty well nearly two decades later, and you can’t help but feel for Jack as he goes through these conflicting emotions in his heart. But…eh.
I guess this is a long-winded way of saying it’s not my cup of tea, but I don’t resent the fact that it nearly made our top 10.
Cary: Real talk: this is my number one. I unabashedly l-o-v-e this movie. Saw it three times in a week over my Christmas break when it was first released. It’s got everything I love about animation – stop-motion, great music, memorable characters, and a fantastic story. And I knew it might get knocked down a few notches because I’ve heard ATB’s opinion on this flick before. But it doesn’t even make the top 10?? I don’t know, guys…I just don’t know…
