While the ending video of “Magia” is simplistic to watch – despite its admittedly good job of foreshadowing the direction the narrative takes – I’m choosing this song more for its application in Madoka Magica. Within minutes of the first episode, this ending theme is used as the ominous, foreboding battle theme during Homura’s fight with Walpurgis. In this context, the song does in an excellent job of setting the tone for Walpurgis’ destruction and how Homura is powerless to stop it. Because of the way it’s implemented in the show, “Magia” becomes more than just an ending theme and a wonderful, fitting piece of the soundtrack that strengthens Madoka Magica and creates a memorable opening sequence.

I love this song. The more cheery OP is also cool.
I also like that the opening is deceiving in terms of how the show actually progresses, hah hah. As much as I love it when songs foreshadow the progression of the show, the occasional song that has nothing to do with the show’s direction is kind of fun as well. 🙂
