ATB’s Top 25 Pokemon: (13) Latios

This is At the Buzzer’s list of the top 25 Pokemon of all-time. We’re in the serious business zone now, counting down one by one until we reach the very best. For more information, click here or check out the Related Links down at the bottom of the post. Don’t forget to vote on how we did in the poll below!

Today’s Pokemon will only open its heart to a Trainer with a compassionate spirit. This Pokémon can fly faster than a jet plane by folding its forelegs to minimize air resistance. Even in hiding, it can detect the locations of others and sense their emotions since it has telepathy. Its intelligence allows it to understand human languages.

Chris: Latios is sleek, aerodynamic, and has swag to spare. My overall dislike of legendaries has been pretty well documented on our list to this point, but Latios breaks that mold.

For one thing, its stats are reasonable enough that you can use it in the Battle Chateau/Maison/whatever the hell else those things are called (although the hold item Soul Dew changes that in some regards). Its unique move, Luster Purge, doesn’t quite hold up compared to Psychic in terms of raw damage, but it outpaces that in a hurry if its 50% chance of lowering SDEF lands. Luster Purge’s animation is also badass.

I already have Lapras if I need a ride across the ocean, but I’m hoping that if I raise my Latios with enough love and care, it’ll shuttle me across the skies. I’m going to need a firm saddle and some strong reins if I’m not going to get blown away at top speed and plunge to my death, but I’m willing to risk it.

Shaun: Latios made my personal voting list, but the funny thing is that I’ve never owned one myself. I tried catching one — Latios, not Latias, because screw Latias — but it kept running away and I almost broke my game and my hand in frustration. The only one I ever had was Chris’, who rented me his so we could tackle the Battle Subway (that thing that I hold dear to my past that he doesn’t even remember).

Long story short, that Latios DESTROYED everything in its path, Luster Purging with reckless abandon. It’s like he would shine a holy light, and anything sinful in its wake would vaporize. Including enemy Pokemon. Poof. Gone.

I love that Latios so much that I’ve done everything I can to turn that “rental” into “owning permanently and using forever.” Shhh, don’t tell him…
