Transparent TV: The Wave of the Future?

This is the Loewe Invisio. And you can see right through it.

I don’t just mean that literally. I mean, look at that picture. Of course you can see through it. I mean metaphorically, where this TV’s attempts to be the next big thing are as clear as day.

Okay, no more puns. This transparent TV is one of the finalists for a concept design contest, so you won’t be seeing it at your local Best Buy just yet. It’s an impressive idea, though. Look at that thing. It’s like we’re inching closer to a scene right out of Tony Stark’s laboratory. Next step: Gwyneth Paltrow.

How does it work? I’m glad you asked, because I have no idea. I’ll let those folks explain it — they’re smarter than I am.

As the first of its kind, the Loewe Invisio introduces technical innovation, combining conventional LCD and the latest TOLED display technology. This allows to create non-transparent / solid moving pictures with rich color reproduction and full contrast range from solid black to pristine white.

As for my take, I’m not sure I’d ever purchase a television like this, even though it’s nifty. It sort of falls in the same category as those flat-screen TVs that mimic the colors on the screen to provide a mood backlighting on whatever wall the TV is mounted on. It’s a nice idea, but not something I’m going to spend extra on. The 50″ Samsung plasma at the At the Buzzer Cave currently is going to have to do for now.

Still, it’s nice to see technology continue to evolve and deliver new things. Now if I could just get my hands on a damn briefcase flying car…
